Fd fuel pump install into 89-91

**update, I've been told that they do fit directly into 86-88 with no problems by some people, but some say it doesn't without having the 89-91 "pump holder". I have no idea as I don't have a series 4 car. If you buy the FD (or other) pump and it doesn't fit in your 86-88, then don't blame me for trying. If it fits, Great!

The 3rd gen FD fuel pump is a direct fit for 89-91 cars, sorry the pre 89s are different. It flows about 20% more then the stock Turbo II pump. An FD pump is a simple, cheap, and a very good safety mod to do. It's recommenced to upgrade your fuel pump for running anything higher then stock boost (8psi). You can usually find used FD pumps on the net for a good price as they are upgrading to even bigger ones. It is also recommenced to rewire your fuel pump as well. You can find info on that back on the how to menu.

First thing disconnect the "NEG" battery terminal. You should always do this while working on electrical things. Pull the rear carpet out of the way and remove that think rubber pad (which weighs 10lbs, mine never went back in...) you will see a metal plate on the left hand side. Remove the 4 screws and lift it up to reveal the pump. Remove the 2 lines (put out your cigarette first) and get ready to plug them with some bigger bolts, one of them will spray pretty good ;). you can depressure the fuel system first but it's a pain in the but. (You can see the power wire and speaker wire from the pump rewire in the top corner)

Next unplug the clip on top of the pump and move the metal plate out of the way. Then remove all the screws holding the pump onto the tank. Gently pull up it. You will have to twist it a bit to clear the fuel sending unit. Once out it will look that this except the white sock will be different as this pic is with the FD one already put in.

Now you have to remove the bolt from the bottom, right under the pump. You also have to remove the 2 wires. Once these 3 things are removed you have to pull the pump straight down out of the holder. Mine was very hard to get out and required a lot of pulling. The pump is held in with an O-ring and a plastic clip on the inside. Don't loose these! the pic below is the stock turbo II one, same size as the FD one but a different sock. You can see the black O-ring and white plastic clip on top.

Install is the reverse, make sure you put the O-ring and plastic clip on top of the FD pump if yours didn't come with them. Push the pump back up into the holder. I think it's easier to put the wires on first though. Once all the way in you can put the bottom bolt back in. The one thing I noticed is that the FD sock touches the sending unit a bit and stops it from moving all the way down. But I figure if the unit can touch the sock you are probably already out of gas anyway so I don't think it'll effect the readings at all. Carefully put the whole assembly back into the tank and screw it down. Make sure you put the fuel lines back on the right way. Then plug it back in and screw on the metal cover.

Now reconnect the battery. You should probably pressurize the fuel system before trying to crank. Find the 2 prong green plug on the pass side shock tower. Stick a jumper wire from one to the other (a loop), now you turn the key to "on" and the fuel pump will stay on, assuming it comes on. You should be able to hear it in the back. Leave it for 20-30 secs or so and then turn the keys off. Take the jumper off, then crank her over. It should start right up.

I noticed this while the pump was out. There is a "cup" in the bottom of the tank. This is so if your tank is low and you take a hard corner your pump will still have a good supply of gas instead of it all going to the other side.
